How Do You Spend Less Time Answering Employee Questions?
A lot of successful leaders want to spend less time answering employee questions. It’s not that they don’t want to be helpful but they understand they only have so many productive hours in a day. Nonstop questions from employees can limit your potential.
What if the key to having to spend less time answering employee questions was about setting a higher standard for your employees? And what if it was one that emphasized thinking about answers on their own, instead of always looking at you for solutions?
Let’s question how employees ask you questions, in this episode of Bite-Sized Brilliance.

Those talkative shitheads are the reason that there's problems on jobs. Familiarity breeds contempt. The talkative ones are the first people you have a problem with on a job. It's even worse when a new person on a job keeps talking to you. Or as I like to call them "insta friends". People who instantly attach themselves to you and just won't shut the fuck up. It's bound to blow up at some point

So I recorded my whole first video. Bout a 9 min video that took 25 takes and 3 hours to finally get. Have a topdown desktop set up where the phone is in a holder. If I had it vertical there would literally be the bar from my set up in the way so I HAVE to film holding it horizontal. Not only that I've already MADE this mistake and filmed vertical. So I had the camera horizontal and even had the settings to 16:9 but for some reason when I went to watch it back the phone saved it vertical and the whole video is ruined.

Hi Mark. My guess is that the camera settings need to be changed. Right now they are likely showing a mirror image. Some people shoot the mirrored image, just because they are used to it and later flip it in the editing process.

I don’t feel this will work in my situation. She’s very bright, can multitask and our desks are near. The problem is when you engage in small talk with her she continues on into other things. At work it's easier. You just get up and say "I have to work now. Talk later". Then leave. I mean you have the best reason in the world to leave. I have a chatty neighbour. She is nice but just wont stop talking. If you don't care about the relation it's not too hard but if you want to have a somewhat decent relation it's hard. So you keep finding these white little lies that doesn't feel so good in the long run. What is the solution in this case?

    • @KenOkel

It's a problem I've faced too. Some people really get energized by chatting. I've realized that if I'm going out to check my mailbox, there's a good chance I'll run into my neighbor and that could mean a five minute conversation that I had not planned on. It's not ideal for me but it is good to have good relations with your neighbors.

Good question. Back when I made the video, many of today's social media platforms did not exist. Now, I'd suggest holding the camera in the way that fits the social media platform you want to use. So for Tik Tok, I'd hold the phone vertically. Where it gets a little tricky is if you want one video that could go to horizontal and vertical social media platforms. In a perfect world, I'd say do the clips in both orientations,

I found in my experience that a mediocre employee can be improved by putting good rules and policies and fences around them. There’s a process to evaluate that. We have to keep them challenged mentally, and we have to show them that this job they're doing today is going to take them to their personal career goal. If you challenge most people in the right way, they want to prove that they can meet that challenge. You’re empowering them and that’s what you want. You’re letting them know you guys run the show and you can even say that, even if it’s not technically true. That’s how you empower the team and let them make mistakes. Cause you have to be the shoulder they come back to cry on when the problem blows up in their face. We want people who are cognitive and aware of their surroundings and are thinking. So, If you are dealing with all the minutia of every step that they need to follow, then you’re enabling them to stay stupid.

I've learned from my mistakes at work, but it doesn't mean I'm gonna forgive myself for them. I have reason to believe that my ASD makes me stand out and makes others perceive me a certain way. Do you know how often I said dumb things, like at work? I stupidly mentioned a man’s right to hit a woman for self-defense, and a new coworker proposed a new topic. And I know she doesn’t like me, because when I was casually chatting with a baker while waiting for the desserts, she entered and said “harassing the baker, John?” I asked why she thought that, and she said “Because you’re John.” Or how about the time I told a coworker (whom I didn’t think would resent this, since he’s clownish, snuck up on a guy, and once made a weight joke to him) “put a sock in your àss. I mean mouth.” Shockingly, he actually did resent that and told me I can’t speak to him that way. I didn’t intend harm; he had interrupted a question of mine to another worker to, if I remember correctly, playfully diss me. I guess I was annoyed with the clownish interruption, but I didn’t mean for it to be obvious. But when it was, I approached him and apologized. But he replied unfairly: “you’re good, man. You just need to learn how to speak to people.” Way to make an apologetic person who already feels bad feel worse, hypocrite A jocular dick giving me the lecture feels worse. In fact, he's actually quite popular and well-liked at work. I've seen him have fun and get along so well with my coworkers, while acting like I don't exist at all. We pass each other in the hall or wherever, and he doesn't speak to me. Of course, I'll admit that I started the silence, since his hypocritical rudeness that one time, but I don't know for sure if he's giving me the silent treatment or anything. Either way, I'd say I'm not on his "good buds to joke with" list. I know he likes my coworkers better than me. Just the concept of being ignored hurts, and it doesn't help when they show admiration for the guy whom I think is obnoxious. And that's not the worst part. I was taken to my boss's office with her and a high-ranking chef. The chef told me that I've been touching my coworkers too much. Not THAT type of touch, of course not! Just casual ones, like on arms or shoulders. I was always very outgoing at work. When I asked her if anyone reported a complaint, she said it didn't matter (so I guess yes). She told me that we need the workers to be comfortable in a good work environment; that I pretty much shouldn't talk about anything other than work and school (we're a university's catering service). That I shouldn't tell my stories because they may be inappropriate to my coworkers. Now yeah, I pretty much don't have a filter, and sometimes I guess I do say "inappropriate" stuff at work, but not _horribly nor intentionally._ I just like to joke around and have fun with people. I really didn't get specific information from the chef about what and who. She understands/ likes that I'm outgoing, but she made it sound risky and in need of limits, for good behavior and my coworkers' sake. And again, that I shouldn't touch their shoulders or arms without consent. But seriously, I'm not a creep or Joe Biden. I didn't mean to be so "handsy." I'm so embarrassed about the lecture. Have I really gone that far at work? I already hate being on the spectrum, and sometimes I actually hate myself.

Distant cousins... 😃. Once I almost took a job at a place where they was a guy named, Kent Ogle. That would have been confusing.

This is just more than a guide. Its a life lesson (also for me, in my case). I made alot of mistakes recently, but my boss was aware of this & share my duties to others. I just need time to recover now & work my way up. Thanks for the vid Sir.

What microphone do you recommend for someone just getting started that has a high quality sound that can be heard after recording outside?

Hi. I'd suggest an external microphone that's called a shotgun microphone. These usually have some sort of windscreen and pickup sound where they are pointed, versus hearing everything around you. Several companies make them. I've heard good things about those from Rode. A big thing is to make sure it will be able to plug into either your phone or traditional camera. Some come with adapters but others don't.

Pretty good message. Appreciated. Suggestion: have some type of background behind you rather than just a black background, it looks like you are floating. And lower the camera angle. It looks like we are kind of looking down at you. Hope this helps. And thanks for uploading the video.
